Ontwerpers Kjersti Alm Eriksen & María Arnardóttir reflecteren op de gebiedsontwikkeling in Nijmegen-Noord. Voor hun interactieve werk bij Art Laboratory zijn ze uitgegaan van de lokale klei, die eeuwenlang zo kenmerkend is geweest voor deze omgeving en binnenkort minder toegankelijk zal zijn: het gebied wordt de komende jaren opgehoogd met een laag zand waarop 12.000 huizen zullen verrijzen.

In het open werkstation van U STAAT HIER nodigen zij je uit om een jashaak te maken. Deze jashaken, waarvan er in totaal 12.000 vervaardigd zouden moeten worden (net zoveel als er woningen worden gebouwd), zijn een gift aan de toekomstige bewoners van dit gebied. De klei waarvan de haak gemaakt wordt is gewonnen uit de grond die binnenkort bebouwd zal zijn met hun nieuwe thuis.

Kjersti en María belichten hiermee de sociale aspecten van gebiedsontwikkeling: hoe verhouden we ons tot onze veranderende leefomgeving? Hun project richt zich niet alleen op de toekomstige bewoner van Nijmegen-Noord maar op alle gebruikers van de stad en haar omgeving.

U STAAT HIER is a platform to reflect on the urban development taking place in Nijmegen-Noord. When you visit Art Laboratory, the ground you stand on will soon become a city. Twelve thousand new homes will be built in Nijmegen-Noord in a short time. Artists Kjersti Alm Eriksen & María Arnardóttir make use of clay, locally excavated from the ground, to cast light on the various affairs concerning the city development in the area. The public is invited to use the local clay to create a gift for the future residents of Nijmegen-Noord.

Gifting in itself is a selfless act. Moreover, in U STAAT HIER the act of gifting is a multitool. Firstly, it is an opportunity to connect residents; the first step towards a positive relationship between the current and future residents of Nijmegen. Secondly, it deals with the importance of time. Since the city plan is to create twelve thousand homes, participants will create twelve thousands ceramic gifts. This requires a lot of time - and there isn’t much of it left before the clay will be inaccessible as the ground will be covered with the new city.

The future residents of Nijmegen-Noord will receive the gift when they have moved into their soon-to-be built home. By accepting the gift, the new residents consent to a newly formed bridge between residents, time and space. The gift itself, a ceramic coat hook, will encourage them to take off their coats. Hopefully, it will help them settle in and make them feel at home.

The coat hook’s ceramic properties are important. By firing the clay, its characteristics change from a soft, fragile substance to one which is rock-hard, impervious to water, wind, and time. The clay becomes a strong, durable object, designed to hold residents’ coats - a necessity in every home. The material will also help remind the future residents that the ground to which their new home now belongs was once accessible. The ground is only a source of clay for a short time longer. After that, the ceramic coat hook will serve as a mere link between the residents of Nijmegen-Noord and their home’s ground’s historic past.
